FBI Arrests "The Coupon Guy" for Coupon Fraud!

Lucas Townsend Henderson, 22, known as “The Coupon Guy”, Coupons Thumb was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation yesterday and charged with counterfeit coupon related crimes (wire fraud and trafficking in counterfeit goods). Henderson allegedly distributed counterfeit coupons and an instruction manual on how to make counterfeit coupons via a website best known for child pornography and racist and anti-Semitic images. Many of the website’s participants engaged in active discussions about how to best exploit the counterfeit coupons and what kinds of excuses to use if caught.

If convicted, Henderson faces up to 30 years in prison and financial penalties.

Henderson spent the last several years at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), majoring in computer science with a focus on computer security and forensics. He worked at RIT’s Information & Technology Services’ Help Desk. Ironically, Henderson’s resume includes a reference to taking a class entitled Ethics in IT. It is our hope that RIT will take appropriate actions.

“How to Make Coupons,” a 45-page tutorial on designing coupons that would “scan at most any store in the U.S.,” thus tricking retailers.

The manual opens with a page listing “The 6 Commandments of Coupon Making,” including the admonition that the tutorial not be uploaded “to any permanent hosting.” Instead, the document should be shared on “anonymous image boards” (like 4chan) where “posts expire after a period of time.” Placing the tutorial at a permanent online location “makes it much easier for companies and moral assholes to come across them and warn stores about them.”
According to a U.S. District Court complaint sworn by FBI Agent Andre Cicero, the bureau has been probing the distribution over the Internet of counterfeit coupons designed to look like ones offered on smartsource.com, which is produced by News America Marketing, a subsidiary of Murdoch’s media conglomerate.

New Rite Aid Coupon Policy!

Thanks, Krazy Coupon Lady!

Here is Rite Aid’s new coupon policy which clarifies many points. There are now more restrictions on BOGO promotions and coupons. Also, customers will be limited to 4 like coupons per shopping trip.
If you shop Rite Aid, even occasionally, you MUST print this policy to keep in your binder!

Rite Aid – Coupon Acceptance Updated 5/25/11

To Our Valued Customers:
Rite Aid gladly accepts the following coupon types as detailed in the coupon acceptance guidelines listed below:

COUPON TYPES:

Manufacturer Coupons

Manufacturer coupons are found in newspapers, magazines and even affixed to products. The UPC on these coupons begins with a “5.”

Rite Aid Manufacturer Coupons

Rite Aid Manufacturer coupons generally appear in our weekly circular, on our website and are sent to customers via e-mail. These coupons are labeled “manufacturer coupon” and have a UPC that begins with “49.”
Rite Aid Valuable Coupons

Rite Aid coupons are labeled “variable coupon” and have a UPC that begins with “48.”
Internet/Print at Home coupons

Rite Aid will accept Internet/print at home coupons up to the equivalent value of $5.00 off.
A Rite Aid coupon (with the Rite Aid logo) is NOT considered an Internet coupon (even if printed off the Internet) and is therefore not subject to the $5.00 maximum.

+UP Reward Coupons

+UP Reward coupons are special coupons earned by a customer in a prior purchase that can be used for any nonprescription purchase with a small number of exclusions that are listed on the +UP coupon. Multiple +UP coupons can be used (subject to the printed exclusions) up to the amount of purchase before sales tax.
Buy One, Get One Free

Rite Aid accepts Buy One, Get One Free coupons, however only one coupon can be used for each pair of items purchased. A customer can use one “cents off” coupon in conjunction with the item they are purchasing on a Buy One Get One Free promotion (or with a Buy One Get One Free coupon), although the value of the cents off coupon cannot exceed the selling price of the item.
Buy One Get One Free coupons cannot be used in conjunction with a Buy One Get One Free promotion.

Total Purchase Coupons

Rite Aid may feature total purchase coupons which discount the total purchase amount based upon meeting specific requirements. For example, $5 off a $25 purchase price threshold coupon.
These coupons are accepted under the following conditions:
The coupon is valid and in date; only one total purchase coupon per transaction.
Total purchase equals or exceeds $25 before tax (before any coupons are applied).
Coupons for individual items can also be used including another “48″ coupon that is tied to an item in the transaction.
Provided the total of items purchased is equal to or greater than the purchase requirement, other coupons can be used in conjunction with the total purchase coupon.

ACCEPTANCE GUIDELINES:

General Guidelines:

Coupons must be valid and in date; Coupons cannot be exchanged for cash.
Register will validate coupon through scanning or keyed entry of the coupon UPC number.
In the event that any item’s selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Rite Aid will accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item. Coupon redemption can never exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is allowed.
When making a return for a product that had a coupon attached, Rite Aid cannot refund cash for the value of the coupon and cannot return the coupon that was used.
Rite Aid reserves the right to not accept any coupon where the validity or the coupon cannot be established.

Multiple Coupons

More than one coupon can be used on the purchase of a single item under the following conditions:
All coupons match the item being purchased.
The total of the coupons is equal to or less than the selling price of the item before sales tax.
No more than one “48″ Rite Aid valuable coupon, one “49″ Rite Aid Manufacturer coupon, and one “5″manufacturer coupon can be used on a single item.

****Rite Aid may accept up to 4 identical coupons for the same number of qualifying items as long as there is sufficient stock to satisfy other customers within the store manager’s sole discretion. ****

**** This, to me, is the most important change to the policy. This will limit how many items we can purchase with coupons at one time, however, it will hopefully allow for HOT sale items to stay on the shelves for everyone to purchase :)

Smart and Final: Great Finds and How to Shop!

I popped into Smart and Final the other day just to see what was there! I scored a few great deals!

Here are some tips for shopping the restaurant supply type stores:

Look for Clearance!

Smart and Final (at least the one near me) always has baked goods on clearance for 50% off - and they are good! I picked up a dutch crunch apple pie yesterday for $1.49. An ENTIRE PIE!

They are always marking down their fresh produce, lettuce, salad fixings etc. as they near expiration. If you eat veggies its a great way to get a good variety for a low cost. I got a pack of Zucchini Squash with 6 HUGE squash for $1.99. They were $1.99 per lb other places.

Look for Larger Quantities of things you use most:
Sometimes Bigger is better (but not always!). Compare the unit price to that of the stores where you regularly shop. If the unit price is cheaper, it's a better deal to go bigger!

Canned items like beans and veggies are often cheaper in larger cans. For instance, My family loves beans- black beans, pinto, white and kidney- my husband cooks with them all the time. A small can of black beans can cost me $1 on a good shopping day (not so many coupons available for beans I guess). I found large can (equal to 3 smaller cans) for $1.99 - sale price at Smart and Final. Much better deal than buying 3 smaller cans!

Check the Meat Dept!
I found Chicken Quarters for $.99 a lb! WAY Cheaper than anywhere else I have been recently!

Unfortunately, you can't use coupons at Smart and Final and places like it, so it's good to check them on occasion for those good deals!

Please tell me what deals you have found at Smart and Final! Comments are always welcome!

Target Clearance, Cheap Mustard, Potatoes, Deodorant and More!

I stopped into another local Target today (I rotate them, to see what deals each have - like clearance!) and was pleasantly surprised to find lots on clearance today!

Look for the RED Clearance Tags in the Frozen Foods and grocery isles!

There were TONS on clearance! My favorite today was Bags of Frozen Hashbrown Potatoes for $1.12 (Market Pantry Brand).

Be on the look out for $.50 Peelies on French's Brown Mustard! Target had them for $1.04 today and with the coupon, they were $.54 !

Also, on Price Cut, was Betty Crocker Boxed Potatoes for $1.02- I had $1.00 off/2 boxes coupons making them $.50!

While I was there I picked up the Sure Deodorant - on sale for $1.50 and I used $1.00 coupons and Old Spice Body Wash 2 Packs- on clearance for $3.40, and using $1.00 off Target, $1.00 off 2 MFC, and a B1G1 Free- making it $.74 for each 2 pack!

OH! And I used the $1.00 mobile coupon on the Philadelphia Cooking Cream along with my $1.50 off MFC making the cooking cream $.50!

There were more great deals, but I couldn't get to them all today!

Happy shopping!

"Cheap" Gas at Safeway!

Yes, that's right... I said $3.89 is CHEAP for gas! Here in Sacramento, CA, gas is coming down but it was nearly $5 a gallon and has been steadily decreasing this past week or so. Today, I found the cheapest gas to be $3.99/gal at Arco and Safeway! Yes, Safeway!

We have several Safeway Stores with gas stations in our area. The other day when I checked out at Safeway, the clerk reminded me that I had "earned" $.10/gal credit from my shopping there! I remembered that today, and got my gas for $3.89/gal! WOOHOO!

Be sure to check your receipts- it should be listed at the bottom, how many gas rewards you have earned and the date in which to use them by!

I saved $18.87 at Walgreen's today and actually MADE money leaving the store! I am so excited! This is my first time actually MAKING money by leaving a store with almost $20 worth of merchandise!

I just stopped into Walgreens - unprepared- so I hadn't scoped out the deals before I went (I don't recommend this). But even without preparation, I headed in with my coupons and saved anyway!

I picked up a can of French's French Fried Onions- on clearance for $1.59. I used my $.75 off coupon paying a total of $.84

I then got 5 Royal Gelatin's for $1 using the in-ad coupon (good through 5/21).

I also had a Scotch 3M Magic Tape Coupon for $1 off one- and Walgreen's had an in-ad coupon for buy one, get 2 (yes 2) FREE! I bought one at $1.99, got 2 free and $1 off- paying $.33 each :)

The Best Deal, by far, were the FREE Reach Tooth Brushes! They were on clearance for .99 and I had $2/2 Single Brushes so I got them for FREE! The Bonus: I got $4 to spend on my next purchase at Walgreens!!

The Krazy Coupon Lady explains this best (had I checked her site before my trip, I would have know!): There is a Catalina promotion going on right now for Reach toothbrushes through 6/12. Walgreens would be a good place to take advantage of this deal. The Reach toothbrushes there are only $0.99 through 5/28. First, here’s the details of the Catalina:

Buy 2, Receive $1.00 Register Reward
Buy 3, Receive $2.00 Register Reward
Buy 4, Receive $4.00 Register Reward

Here’s how to make some money when you buy Toothbrushes:

Reach Toothbrushes $0.99
Buy 4, Receive $4.00 Register Reward, Limit 1
Use 4 $1.00/1 Reach Toothbrushes from SS 4/17
Or use 2 $2.00/2 Reach Toothbrushes from SS from 5/8
Pay $0.00, Receive $4.00 Register Reward
Final Price: $4.00 Moneymaker

My total out the door was $3.46 for 16 items and I got $4 back to boot!

Walmart's Ad Match Guarantee

Here is a great synopsis of Walmart's Ad Match Guarantee in layman's (or woman's)terms:

Our Ad Match Guarantee

We’re committed to providing low prices every day. On everything. So if you find a lower advertised price on an identical product, tell us and we’ll match it. Right at the register.
We gladly match the price in the following types of ads:*

* Buy one, get one free ads with a specified price
* Example: Buy one for $2.49, get one free (BOGO)

* Competitors' ads that feature a specific item for a specified price at a specific retailer
* Example: $2.99

* Preferred shopping card advertised prices for specific item
* that are in a printed ad and require a competitor's shopping card for the discount to apply

* For fresh produce and meat items
* when the price is offered in the same unit type (lb. for lb.; each for each)

*The following are guidelines and limitations:

* We will match any local competitor's advertised price.
* We do not require customers to have the ad with them to honor a competitor's ad.
* Items purchased must be identical to the ad (size, quantity, brand, flavor, color, etc.)

We DO NOT match the price in the following types of competitor ads:

* Items that require a separate purchase to get the ad price
* example: "Buy [item A] to get [item B] for $C"

* Items with no actual price that require a purchase to get free product
* example: "Buy both [items A & B] to get [item C] for free"

* Items that require a purchase to get a competitors' gift card
* example: "Buy [item A] to get a $B gift card

* Buy one, get one free (BOGO) ads with no actual price given
* Going out of business or closeout prices
* Percentage off
* example: "All mascara, 40% off"

* Competitors' private label price promotions

We do not honor:

* Ads when the actual price for items cannot be determined.
* Internet pricing
* Misprinted ad prices of other retailers
* Competitor ads from outside of the store's local trade territory
